Jahi

Jahi is a Persian Goddess.  She probably began as a Great Mother Goddess.  However, today she is known from the role ascribed to her by Zoroastrianism.  In Zoroastrianism, her epithet was The Whore and she seduced the first man in the primal garden.  She was also the first menstruator, punishment for either kissing or mating with the serpent Ahriman, which she created.  According to Barbara G Walker's encyclopedia, patriarchs of the Abrahamic religions "probably derived their notions of the sinfulness of women (by virtue of the descent from Eve) from Persian ascetics who claimed all women were 'whores' because they are descended from Jahi."

I decided to base my painting on Miley Cyrus because she's my favorite modern Jahi.  In the process I came across a photo of the tattoo she got the day her ex filed for divorce, a serpent eating a man.  Jahi's Revenge.

Walker continues, "Oddly enough, some of the earliest forms of the name of the Jewish God seem to have been masculinized versions of the name of Jahi.  Variations included Jahu, Jah, Yahu, Yahweh, Iau, Jaho.  Some myths indicate that this God like Ahriman once had a serpent form and may have played the part of the Great Mother's serpent."

Whoa.

Yaldaboath, the Old Testament God of Gnostic Christianity did have a serpent's tail, and was created by a Goddess.  Read the story here.

Further evidence that Yahweh may have a link to Jahi the Whore can be found in the Gospel of Thomas, verse 105, "Jesus said, 'Whoever knows the father and the mother will be called the child of a whore.'"
