Amaterasu is the Sun Goddess of Japan. Amaterasu is portrayed in Japan's earliest literary texts, the Kojiki (ca. 712 CE) and the Nihon Shoki (720 CE), as the ruler of the heavenly realm of Takamagahara. She is the head of the pantheon.
The Japanese Imperial family has traditionally claimed descent from Amaterasu, which confers upon them the right to rule.
